Contraception Methods Overview
-
Barrier Methods
Barrier contraception uses physical devices to block fertilization, preventing pregnancy. The most common is the condom, made from flexible materials that prevent direct contact during intercourse. Condoms are widely used due to their high effectiveness and safety for both partners. Additionally, they help prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs). -
Oral Contraceptives
Taken by mouth, oral contraceptives contain female hormones estrogen and progesterone, which regulate ovulation and menstruation. They are one of the easiest contraception methods to start, often used alongside condoms. Oral contraceptives must be taken daily at the same time and may cause side effects such as acne or weight gain. -
Device-Based Contraception
-
Subdermal Implant (Implanon):
A device implanted just under the skin of the inner upper arm that releases small amounts of hormones to suppress ovulation for about three years. It can be removed anytime upon request. While highly effective, some may feel discomfort with the idea of an implanted device. -
LNG Intrauterine System (Kyleena, Jaydess, Mirena):
These devices release a steady amount of hormone daily to thin the uterine lining, preventing implantation of a fertilized egg. Besides contraception, they reduce menstrual bleeding and duration, making them useful for treating heavy periods or severe menstrual pain.
